Last night’s graphic, silkscreened today. First time successfully printing. Surprised to learn that I can go a lot more detailed, but for doing this project super fast, I’m pretty satisfied with what’s going on.   ANTS FOREVER.

Even though this came out more punk-band-xerox-flyer than the originally intentioned retro horror poster vibe I was going for, I’m still pretty happy with it. This sucker is going to be printed as a 11 x 14 screenprint tomorrow if all goes according to plan.

First page of the third comic, inked! Gonna color in that wasp (Polistes dominula) a bit later.

I drew my friend Phil riding a giant ant.
Yup.

Character sketch, actually from the same sci-fi project. woo.

This is how I spent yesterday- redesigning that Dryinidae (the wasps I study!) alien design. I keep wanting to name the species after the world expert for this family, Massimo Olmi, but I should probably ask him first :D

More results images from tonight.

Death and (nest) destruction!

Two more results images from the AMNH Ology game. Once again, these’ll be small images that pop up to show you the outcome of your choice. It’s kind of a choose your own adventure game!

I kind of want to turn the first one in to a full fledged oil painting.

An alien based off of the wasps I study, the Dryinidae!
The Dryinidae are a family of parasitoid wasps that are ridiculously bizarre and terrifying looking. The females are often wingless (and mistaken for weird ants) and most have these pincer-like claws on the front legs that are used to grapple with hosts while ovipositing. Here’s a good picture that shows this process: http://bugguide.net/node/view/408876
I’ve been playing around with ideas for a science fiction webcomic for younger readers. This would be the mom of one of the protagonists. Still a lot of work to be done on the conceptual design- I’m not all that happy with this- I like the whole “two pairs of arms, one pair of legs” set up, but I’m not too thrilled with the rest of the body- not enough gracefulness, I think.  It’s reading too much brute and not enough stealth deadliness. I might get rid of the whiskers/setae and go back to antennae.
Ah well, was fun to do.
